Dr. Ajay Deshpande

Currently serving as the Adjunct Professor at the Ashank Desai Centre for Policy Studies, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Professor Deshpande brings a wealth of academic insight and policy expertise to his role. His tenure as an Expert Member of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) from March 2013 to July 2017 underscores his pivotal role in adjudicating environmental disputes and shaping environmental jurisprudence in India through landmark decisions. His international experience includes serving as a part-time member of the Compliance Review Panel of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Manila from July 2017 to July 2022. In this capacity, he contributed significantly to ensuring compliance with environmental and social safeguards in ADB-funded projects across Asia, highlighting his commitment to sustainable development on a regional scale. His career includes senior positions within the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, where he played instrumental roles in formulating and implementing environmental policies and regulations at the state level. His tenure as an Environmental Specialist at Water and Power Consultancy Services (WAPCOS) in New Delhi from 1992 to 1997 enriched his expertise in water resource management and environmental consultancy. Professor Deshpande's leadership is further evident in his role as Chairman of the committee tasked by the NGT to monitor compliance with Hazardous Waste regulations nationwide, demonstrating his proactive approach to enforcing environmental standards. His international engagements extend to collaborating with prominent organizations such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP), where he contributed his expertise to regional environmental initiatives and policies. Throughout his career, Professor Deshpande has been a driving force in advancing environmental sustainability, policy formulation, and regulatory compliance both nationally and internationally. Dr. Dubey is a well-known academic and administrator with a long and impressive career at many respected institutions and in government advisory roles. He served as a Professor Emeritus at Sri Sri University, Cuttack, Odisha, and as the Vice Chancellor of K. R. Mangalam University, Gurugram. He has also been Director at the Campus of Open Learning, Delhi University, and Vice Chancellor of Sanskriti University, Mathura. Dr. Dubey's tenure at Delhi University included roles such as Dean of the Science Faculty and Professor and Head of the Department of Geology. His expertise in geospatial technology and environmental sciences is recognized through his membership in various expert panels and committees. He was an Expert Member of the Program Advisory Committee for Geospatial Technology under the Natural Resources Data Management System (NRDMS), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India (2017-2020), and served on the Geospatial Technology Policy Consultative Committee from 2009 to 2015. Additionally, he was an Expert Member of the Expert Appraisal Committee for Industries at the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate change (MoEFCC) from 2009 to 2015. He has contributed to groundwater research as a Member of the Expert Panel for R&D proposals at the Indian National Committee on Ground Water (INCGW), CGW, during 2010-2011 and was an Expert Member for the River Valley Project at the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change from 1992 to 1996.
